Abstract
The article is concerned with the operation of the opposition between the oral and the written word in the “Evenings at a Farm Near Dikan’ka”, with relations between plots of the novellas as well as those of their introductory stories, on the one hand, and folk stories of the supernatural, on the other, and, finally, with the fact that, in the end, Gogol’s narrative turns out to be a retelling as is often the case with folk culture. The essay includes the analysis of the behaviour of story-tellers and their audiences presented in the novellas.
