Abstract
The article addresses the particularities of character naming in the works of the Latin American novelists of the 19 th - the first half of the 20 th centuries. The interaction of the historical/cultural and etymological dimensions of personal names is scrutinized; their function to build up the symbolical/allegorical stratum of literary works is revealed.
