Abstract
Though the relationship between the ancient Greek tragedy and rhetoric (the art of discourse) is universally recognized, and extensively discussed in the scholarly literature, no attempts were made so far to investigate the ancient Indian drama from this point of view. The reasons for this are clear and related not only to the chamber, court and completely devoid of civil pathos character of the literary forms of the drama but to the very nature of ancient Indian rhetoric. Originated from the oral speech performed during the rituals the Indian rhetoric still remains a poorly studied subject. The aim of this article is to put forward the problem of the relationship between the rhetoric and drama in ancient India and to introduce new research materials relevant for the topic.
