Abstract
This paper deals with the well-known in the European linguistics problem of so called 'heavy (base) roots', discussed from the alternative point of view: it is question of the quantity of such morae in such roots and the adequacy of their existing reconstructions. It is shown that the almost forgotten approach to reconstruction of F. Fortunatov is advantageous in its refl ection of PIE, pointing at the same time to certain peculiarities, quite similar to the well-known in typology morphosyllabic languages.
