Abstract
Fielding's moral ideas, as expressed in his periodical essays and novels, are analysed within the context of contradictory opinions concerning human nature, held by English authors of the mid-eighteenth-century: deists and Anglicans, followers of Shaftsbury and Mandeville, methodists and latitudinarians. Special attention is paid to the mode by which Fielding's moral attitudes are expressed in his novels.
