Abstract
The system of ideas of A.A. Potebnia the great Russian linguist is regarded as a range of antinomies. In the first place, there is an antinomy of his two approaches towards the word. As a language unit the word has a triadic structure: the “outer form”, the “inner form” and meaning. The “inner form” is actualized in poetry, while it is not manifest in prose-writing. But as a means of speech communication the word is connected with a life situation. At the basis of the image the model of which is the “image of the fable” is the “use” of a “told story”, the answer to a certain question. Relations between poetry and prose, prose and science become problematic. His second approach has some common ground with Bakhtin’s concept of language and “speech utterance” and is, in fact, one of its most important sources.
