Abstract
It is demonstrated that in the semantic of the Russian imperfective the progressive meaning, with its synchronous observer, is opposed to two other positions of the observer: the retrospective position for the past tense and the prospective one for the future tense. These two positions of the observer give rise to symmetric relationship between the past and the future imperfective.
