Abstract
The article traces the presence of certain tragic motifs of the "Orlando Furioso" which, independently of Ariosto, its author, - were developed by Shakespeare in "King Lear". Especially highlighted is the idea proclaimed by Lear right after he was disavowed by his own daughters: that is, that life is unlivable when reduced to basic necessity. In this he is close to the Italian cinquecentists and the humanism of the Renaissance, in general.
