Abstract
The paper presents a corpus study of the semantic class of ‘continuation’ verbs. The following semantic distinctions are relevant for the verbs of this class: 1) situation type and the subject’s control over the situation; 2) expectations about the change of the situation; 3) fixed time of the expected situation change; 4) underlying cause of the absence of change; 5) speaker’s attitude to the absence of change; 6) which phase of the situation is expected to change (beginning of the new situation vs. the end of the old situation). Verbs that allow both options, such as ‘to linger’, distinguish between the two interpretations by means of constructions: direct complement is interpreted as a postponed end and instrumental modifier as a postponed beginning. The aspectual properties of verbs are demonstrated to be influenced by their semantics.
