Abstract
The paper shows that E.M. Forster's treatment of the most important social and moral issues in accordance with traditions of the 19th-century Realism in his novel "A Passage to India" is touched with irrationality and absurdity in the presentation of reality that are characteristic of Modernism. This kind of duality marks certain aspects as well as the artistic structure of the novel as a whole.
