Abstract
A new covert category of nouns called ”standardness” is brought to light in the paper. It comprises the nouns that serve as a source of linguistic means for marking values of attributes and parameters of physical objects and events. It is subcategorized on a thematic basis into standards of colour, form, sound etc. Form standards as well as the semantics of folk form terms derived from them are a subject of closer examination. The latter are compared to geometrical terms. Incidentally the semantics of diminutives functioning as form terms is addressed.
